Getting to Ometepe is part of the fun. Whether crossing the fresh water sea of Lake Nicaragua to sweeping volcanic views of this unique island or flying in an overhead wing Cessna with spectacular views all around, Ometepe is both remote and accessible if done right. Please have a look at this map which shows Ometepe’s position in Nicaragua and also the location of San Juan de la Isla on the island.
Ometepe Island can be reached via Lake Ferry or Air. 16 different ferries run daily between San Jorge and two ports on Ometepe between 6 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Some of these boats are very rustic passenger only, others carry cars and small trucks, but the best one is also the ferry that serves the port closest to San Juan de la Isla. It is called Ferry Rey Cocibolca which lands and departs from San José del Sur, just a 15 min drive in private transportation to our lodge.
There is also twice a week commercial Cessna flights to and from the island’s landing strip with La Costeña. These flights depart from Managua’s international airport and also connect the island to San Carlos and San Juan del Norte airports on the San Juan River.
Transportation from the landing strip and/or ports can be arranged with local taxis, local buses can also be use or reserved in advance (recommended) with our lodge. You can find a complete ferry and flight schedule, as well as other helpful transportation travel hints on our Traveler's Guide
